Big freeze hits Brum

BIRMINGHAM was transformed into a winter wonderland as freezing temperatures brought snow to the second city, turning all our famous landmarks into snow-capped visions of beauty.

snowSchools across the Midlands closed and many offices shut up shop for a few days as children and adults alike took to the streets to take part in snowball fights and sledging fun. Whilst snow fell during the day, below freezing temperatures moved in at night creating the coldest January on record.
Birmingham joined the rest of the country as the UK was engulfed in inches of snow and whilst it caused inevitable chaos for many motorists, those lucky enough to get outside revelled in the white stuff.

What the arctic weather conditions did prove however was just how adept at fighting bad weather the city is and although a small number of transport routes were closed, most main routes were kept open. Birmingham City Council responded to the demands of the weather by constantly having supplies of grit replenished and focusing on the main roads in and out of the city.

Many schools braved a second wave of severe snowy conditions to open their doors for students taking examinations and the majority of Brummies either went outside to enjoy the rare snowfall or put on a traditional stiff upper lip, continuing life as normal and carrying on with life the best they could.
With the big freeze set to continue over the weekend it looks as though better weather is on the way for next week.
