City youngsters performing above national average

A report has revealed Birmingham's youngsters are achieving GCSE results about the national average. The city's 5A*-C result (66.4 per cent) is now above the England average (provisionally 64.6 per cent) and every school achieved the 2008 national floor target of at least 30 per cent 5A*-C.

The report went on to quote: "Birmingham tops the table in comparison to other large urban authorities (e.g. Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Bradford, Bristol, Wolverhampton). We are particularly pleased that there have been continued improvements for some of the groups that have identified at risk of underachieving.

"For example, Black Caribbean boys' 5A*-C results increased by two per cent to 53 per cent and Pakistani boys' results increased by nine per cent to 60 per cent. Following an 11 per cent improvement last year, there has been a further two per cent improvement to 40 per cent in the percentage of white disadvantaged boys achieving 5A*-C. The percentage of looked after children achieving at least one qualification has increased to 73 per cent from 61 per cent last year."
