BIRMINGHAM Body Shop owner, Martin Parlett is used to repairing damaged cars, but in a surprising twist he, too, has just enjoyed new body parts and is celebrating the results of his new vision. “You feel like shouting from the rooftops. People should be queuing up to have this ReZoom eye operation – it is amazing,” said the 54 year old.
For Martin, from Witton, had been battling with his glasses for years but thanks to some cutting edge technology, he is now seeing much clearer than he was 20 years ago, able to ditch the glasses for both distance and near vision. Due to his lifestyle, Martin found his glasses were becoming a bit of a problem.
He explained “The last pair of glasses I had only lasted 30 hours. I was always getting paint on them or sitting on them. As I drive so many cars and drop them off at customers’ houses, I often end up leaving them in the car! I’ve put up with it for ten years and had had enough: I probably went through 40 pairs of glasses in that time!”
Luckily, Martin heard about the new AMO ReZoom multi-focal lenses that can be surgically implanted into your eyes, removing the need for glasses and this small piece of news changed his lifestyle forever.
“I went to see an eye surgeon at the Aston University Day Hospital and he suggested having the multifocal implants. I thought about it for a while and decided that it was what I needed.
“Everyone was so friendly at the hospital and instantly put me at my ease. The first eye was operated on three weeks ago and the other one last week. I am gob smacked: it is absolutely fantastic. It must be 20 years since I have seen this well. I can see at all distances and I find that I can now read a lot more, without juggling two pairs of glasses. It has changed my life completely – not only being able to see, especially for driving, but also not to worry about glasses getting dirty, covered in paint, or lost.”
Martin’s consultant ophthalmic surgeon, Mr Mani Subramaniam, who has performed many of these ReZoom multifocal lens insertions, explained: “Our eyes’ ability to adjust to different distances gradually reduces with age, hence the need for glasses. For many people glasses hinder their normal lifestyle but we are now able to overcome this problem.
“The ReZoom multifocal lens implants correct vision at all distances, not just short-sightedness, so patients like Martin walk away free of their specs. Not all patients may be suitable for this procedure, but this can be discussed at a consultation.”
